South Whidbey Fire/EMS seeks a new fire commissioner to fill the position vacated by Adrienne Hawley.

To fill the vacancy, the current board of fire commissioners conducts a formal selection process with several required steps. First, anyone interested must submit a letter of interest to Fire Chief, H.L. “Rusty” Palmer no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21. The next step are interviews in a public meeting. Finally, the board of fire commissioners reviews the candidates’ qualifications and appoints the new commissioner in a public meeting. The new commissioner will serve until the 2021 general election.

The new fire commissioner, and any new candidates, must then run in the 2023 general election to serve a new 6-year term.

Individuals must meet the following minimum requirements to hold office:

  1. Be a U.S. Citizen.
  2. Be 18 years old or older.
  3. Be a registered voter residing in the District for at least 30 days.
  4. Have no felony convictions unless the individual has had his or her civil rights restored subsequent to the conviction.  Conviction of anything less than a felon does not preclude an individual from holding public office.
  5. Have no contractual conflict of interest with the District, i.e. a contractual relationship with the District that exceeds $1,500 per month in compensation.
