FIREFIGHTER/EMT TESTING ANNOUNCEMENT, Apr 7, 2021

South Whidbey Fire/EMS will be establishing a list for future hiring to the position of Firefighter/EMT.  This list will be effective for at least one year after it is established.

SWFE will be restructuring the career staffing model in the near future, moving from two shifts of part-time paid responders to three shifts of full-time paid responders.  Each shift is comprised of one Lieutenant and three firefighter/EMT’s.  This increase in staffing is made possible by a levy lid lift that was approved by the district voters last year.  However, due to possible legislative action it is currently unclear when the district will start receiving the additional funding, so the start date for the new positions is uncertain at this time.

The career positions are represented by IAFF Local 5212, and because of the change in the staffing model, the existing collective bargaining agreement must be modified to align with these changes.  This process has not been completed, so the pay and benefits package is not set at this time.  However, the 2021 budget approved a pay matrix based on an annual salary range of $56,953 to $60,439 for full time Firefighter/EMT positions, and benefits include LEOFF retirement and an excellent insurance plan.

Requirements to apply for Firefighter/EMT:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License (within 1 month of appointment)
  • WA or NREMT Emergency Medical Technician
  • WA, NFPA, IFSAC, or ProBoard Firefighter I
  • NIMS 100, 200, and 700 training
  • WA EVIP or equivalent emergency vehicle driver training
  • CPAT physical ability test

The testing process will be comprised of a resume/application screening, a written test, an assessment center, and interviews.  The written test and assessment center will be conducted on Saturday, May 22, 2021, beginning at 08:00 in Langley, WA.

Applications for Firefighter/EMT, including cover letter, resume and copies of certifications must be received by mail or in person at SWFE Station 36, 5579 Bayview Rd, Langley, WA 98260 no later than 4:00 PM (Pacific time) on Friday, May 7th, 2021.  As original signatures are required, applications will not be accepted electronically. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
