Lateral Firefighter Volunteer Program
South Whidbey Fire/EMS welcomes volunteers moving in from other parts of the state or country to join our force. There is a simple application process in order to ensure you have all the necessary training and qualifications. Please don’t delay beginning the process if you are planning to relocate to South Whidbey Island. We look forward to meeting you.
What is it?
This program is offered to volunteer firefighters who are moving to the South Whidbey Island fire district from within Washington state or from out of state.
Where do I start?
Click to download the Volunteer Application. Completed applications can be dropped off in person by the applicant at Station 31, 5535 Cameron Rd, Freeland, WA 98249 during normal department hours so the administration may review the package and give any final instructions. It may also be mailed but this will cause a delay in processing the application. Faxed or E-mailed applications will not be accepted. If you have specific questions please call us directly at (360) 321-1533.
What happens next?
We will do a background check, drug test, and contact your previous department. We will request your records as well as review your application. If there is a need for any additional training, arrangements will be made for you to participate by working directly with our local office. We will also require you to take a work capacity test if you have not completed one within one year.
How long can I expect this process to take?
In most cases a lateral volunteer transfer is a very simple process. Once all the documents are in place, approval will be granted as quickly as possible so that you may come aboard and join the volunteer department.
